Do You Need A New Shower Pan?
Here is a little test you can perform to see if your shower pan is
leaking or if the water is coming from another source.
- 1. Look at the grout in the shower stall walls mainly in the corners, if it is cracked then more than likely the water is coming from the holes and running down the inside of the shower and under the pan causing it to appear as if the pan itself is leaking.
You should use silicone caulking and caulk the corners of the shower stall
if you replace the grout more than likely it will only crack again once the house shifts from the changing of the weather.
- Another thing to look at is the drain and just how fast the water runs out.
- If you find your feet are standing in puddles of water on the shower floor this could mean that the drain is clogged and just needs a little liquid plumber or in any case a visit from a plumber would cost about $80.00 compared to a new shower pan and floor at about $1.300.00
Should I Buy A New Shower Pan And Place It Myself?
In today's market there are more choices for
the average home owner to choose from.
Some questions to ask yourself are.
- 1.How much will the shower pan cost and the other materials to do the project?
- 2.Would my time be better invested at work and should I hire a tile setter?
- 3.Is the information available for me to fill I can do this project?
Question: SHOULD SHOWER PAN MUST BE REPLACED?
My tile shower base from the 1980s and it has started to leak into my basement. My tilesetter says that it is a lead or copper shower pan that has rotted out and it cannot be fixed. My only choice, it seems, is that the entire floor has to be ripped out and a new pan and ceramic tile floor to be installed. I will never be able to match the tile on the walls, so I'm looking at a complete shower remodel job. That will cost a lot.
Can I do anything to stop it from leaking?
Reply: Old Copper Shower Pans,
Will always rot in the long run, so you are best to replace it with a PVC pan.
You may be able to patch the leak for a short time but this will not fix the problem.
If you are planning to keep your home or even to sale it then you should invest
in the showerstall for this will increase the value of your home.
